How Does a Strapping Machine Work? A Guide to Industrial Bundling

A strapping machine, also known as a strapper or bundling machine, is a device used to secure products or pallets by applying a plastic or metal strap (belt) around them. This process, known as “strapping” or “banding,” ensures that items remain tightly bound and stable during transport or storage. Depending on the volume and specific needs of the operation, these machines can be manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how a typical industrial strapping machine operates:

Strap Feeding:

The process begins with the feeding of the strap—usually made of Polypropylene (PP) or Polyester (PET)—from a coil or dispenser. The material is fed through the machine’s internal track until it reaches the strapping head, ready to be applied.

Product Positioning:

The object or package to be secured is placed on the machine’s work surface (or conveyor belt). In automatic systems, sensors detect the package and position it correctly within the “arch” of the machine.

Cycle Activation:

Once the product is in place, the strapping cycle is triggered. In manual models, this is done by the operator; in automatic lines, the machine initiates the process instantly upon detecting the load.

Tensioning:

This is a critical stage. The machine pulls the strap back from the dispenser, tightening it firmly around the object. Modern industrial strappers allow for adjustable tension levels, ensuring the strap is tight enough to secure the load without damaging the product or its primary packaging.

Cutting:

Immediately after sealing, an integrated blade cuts the strap from the rest of the coil. The machine then automatically pre-feeds the next length of strap, preparing for the next cycle.

Strap cutting:

If the strap used is not pre-cut, the strapping machine automatically cuts it at the end of the strapping process.

Item release:

Once the strapping cycle is completed, the strapped item is ready to be removed from the machine and safely transported or stored.

Strapping machines are indispensable in the packaging, shipping, and logistics sectors. They drastically simplify the bundling process, ensuring that loads remain secure, reducing material waste compared to manual methods, and providing a reliable, professional finish to every shipment
